Giants' Jung Hoo Lee's Detainment: A Close Call at LAX (2026)

Imagine this: a star athlete, Jung Hoo Lee, finds himself in a sticky situation at the airport, but it's not due to any scandal or controversy. It's a simple case of forgetting his travel documents!

The Giant's Giant: Jung Hoo Lee's Detour at LAX

On a Wednesday in January, outfielder Jung Hoo Lee, a key player for the San Francisco Giants, was detained at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) due to a paperwork oversight. This minor hiccup, however, didn't stop the team and its supporters from rallying to ensure his swift release.

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi's office confirmed that Lee was on his way to California to participate in the second of four Giants' FanFest events, scheduled for Saturday in San Ramon. Pelosi, along with the Giants organization, congressional partners, and federal liaisons, worked behind the scenes to resolve the issue.

"Today, Jung Hoo Lee experienced a brief travel delay at LAX due to a paperwork issue," the Giants stated. "The matter was promptly addressed with the relevant authorities, and he has since been given the green light to continue his journey. We extend our gratitude to all parties involved for their professionalism."

Lee, 27, is entering his third season with the Giants after signing a lucrative six-year, $113 million contract in December 2023. His batting average of .265 over two seasons, with 10 home runs and 63 RBIs in 187 games, showcases his talent. Despite missing most of his rookie year in 2024 due to a shoulder injury, he bounced back strongly in 2025, playing in 150 games.

In early January, the Giants sent a delegation to South Korea, including President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey, CEO Larry Baer, and Manager Tony Vitello. The purpose of this trip was to promote the organization and celebrate Lee's Korean heritage. Lee and the Giants hosted baseball clinics at local high schools and even treated the visiting party to a delicious Korean barbecue.

As the Giants prepare to open spring training in Scottsdale, Arizona, in three weeks, Lee, along with several of his teammates, has committed to play in the World Baseball Classic in March. This international tournament will be a great opportunity for Lee to showcase his skills on a global stage.

While the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) did not respond to requests for comment, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of travel documentation. It's a friendly reminder for all travelers to double-check their paperwork before embarking on their journeys!
