A political crisis is unfolding in Guinea-Bissau, and the fate of its elections hangs in the balance. The African Union (AU) observation mission, led by Filipe Nyusi, has declared that there is a clear winner in the recent elections, which were abruptly halted by a coup d'état. Nyusi, a former Mozambican president, emphasized the need to publish the election results, stating, "In Guinea-Bissau, democracy was tested, and the people spoke. There is a winner, and their voices must be heard."
But here's where it gets controversial: the National Electoral Commission (CNE) has refused to continue the electoral process or publish the results, citing alleged vandalism and damage to its offices. Judge Idriça Djaló, the deputy executive secretary of the CNE, claimed that "armed and hooded men" disrupted the process, preventing the announcement of provisional results.
Fernando Dias, a presidential candidate who believes he has won, has called for an urgent plenary session to announce the results. His campaign, currently based at the Nigerian embassy in Bissau, accused the CNE's executive secretariat of usurping power and demanded that the plenary session be convened to respect the will of the people.
The situation escalated on November 26th when a High Military Command seized power, removing President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who fled the country. The general elections, held just days earlier on November 23rd, had proceeded smoothly, with opposition candidate Fernando Dias claiming victory over Embaló. However, a shooting incident in Bissau on the eve of the official results announcement led to a military takeover, with General Horta Inta-A appointed as transitional president.
The general's announcement of a one-year transition period and the appointment of Ilídio Vieira Té, a former minister under Embaló, as prime minister and finance minister, has further complicated matters. A new transitional government was sworn in on Saturday, including members of the deposed administration and military officers.
And this is the part most people miss: the historic PAIGC party, which supported Fernando Dias, was excluded from the elections. During the coup, PAIGC leader Simões Pereira was detained, and the opposition has denounced the military takeover as a move to prevent the publication of election results.
