"Gerhard Folgero, the visionary captain, raised funds to build this ship in Norway. His dream was to demonstrate the capabilities of the Vikings," Atkins said. "Imagine sailing from Norway in a 42-foot boat, without a radio or motor, a feat never attempted in modern times."
The vessel, initially displayed in Duluth's Lake Park, faced deterioration due to neglect and vandalism over the years. However, the volunteers' dedication knew no bounds, and they embarked on a restoration journey in the late 1980s. After completing the restoration, they faced the challenge of finding a suitable home for the ship.
"We've been working tirelessly with the city to secure a building for the ship, but our efforts fell short. In 2021, we decided to move the ship to Knife River, where it now rests under a new shelter at the Julebeyen," Atkins added.
