Imagine a massive housing development rising above a sprawling rail yard, bridging divided neighborhoods and creating thousands of affordable homes. Sounds ambitious, right? Cea Weaver, director of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, emphasized the dual benefits: “It’s a barrier between some of the most diverse neighborhoods in Queens,” she said. “Connecting them is crucial.” But she also acknowledged the elephant in the room: “It’s extraordinarily expensive, and we need federal support to make it happen.”
The idea isn’t entirely new. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio first proposed housing on the site, but it stalled under Mamdani’s predecessor, Eric Adams. In 2020, the city estimated the project would cost $14 billion. So, why the jump to $21 billion? The mayor’s office hasn’t explained the discrepancy, leaving many scratching their heads. What’s truly surprising is the unexpected camaraderie between Mamdani and Trump. Despite their stark ideological differences, the two have found common ground since Mamdani’s election. Trump, a Queens native, seems genuinely enthusiastic about the project. Mamdani’s spokesperson, Joe Calvello, noted that during their previous meeting in November, Trump encouraged the mayor to bring “big ideas” to the table. “The president was very enthusiastic about this idea,” Calvello said. At one point, Mamdani even held up a mock Daily News front page with the headline ‘Trump to City: Let’s Build,’ though it’s unclear if Sunnyside was explicitly mentioned.
But here’s the catch: any construction on the site requires federal approval because Sunnyside Yard is owned by Amtrak.
