Among the various disturbing elements, five figures are depicted being hung, each bearing a municipal ward number or a symbolic crown and dollar-sign necklace. Ivan Normandeau, the reeve of the rural municipality of La Broquerie and president of the Association of Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (AMBM), has stated that municipal officials in southern Manitoba have been deeply troubled by the display since its appearance.
"As an elected official, it's incredibly concerning to witness such personal intimidation and graphic representation," Normandeau expressed. He added that while officials typically receive emails or phone calls, this display takes intimidation to a new level.
A Growing Concern
Normandeau highlighted that rural Manitoba has been grappling with an increase in threats towards municipal officials over the past several years. He believes that social media has exacerbated the issue, spreading misinformation and causing harm.
The AMBM is now collaborating with the Association of Manitoba Municipalities to address these concerns and enhance the safety of municipal officials. Normandeau fears that the rising threats and displays like the one in Sainte-Geneviève may deter potential candidates from running for municipal office in Manitoba.
Political Leaders Respond
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has also voiced his concerns about the display, urging residents to find more civil ways to express their frustrations with politicians. Kinew emphasized the importance of maintaining a calm and respectful dialogue, even when passionate about political issues or policies.
"We don't need to resort to violent imagery or language," Kinew stated. "There are ways to articulate objections and criticisms without crossing the line into violence."
He added that Minister of Municipal and Northern Relations Glen Simard has been in communication with local leaders to address the display and its implications.
