In 2015, Karl, owner of multiple oil and gas companies, was sanctioned by the AER for violating 18 orders, including failure to pay various fees and costs.

Farm Lending's court documents state that they had 'serious concerns' about Karl's history with the AER, suggesting a pattern of non-compliance with legal obligations. Despite Karl's efforts to secure alternative funding, the commitment letter he provided was deemed potentially illegitimate or based on misrepresentations.

The $5 million loan has now matured, and Farm Lending is seeking a receiver, stating that the debtors have no viable defense for their default. If a receiver is appointed, they would take control of the ranch, including its agricultural, event, and livestock operations, with the aim of selling it as a going concern.
