WNBA Free Agency Slows, But Toronto Tempo's Coaching Staff Grows
The WNBA's free agency period may be on hold, but that hasn't stopped the Toronto Tempo from making strategic moves. While negotiations between the league and players remain stagnant, the Tempo is focusing on building its coaching staff for the 2026 season.
On Wednesday, the team announced the addition of two new coaches to the staff of newly appointed head coach Sandy Brondello. Ciara Carl and Brian Lankton will join the Tempo's inaugural coaching team, bringing valuable experience and connections to the franchise.
Lankton, previously with the New York Liberty, has a strong background in player development and video coordination. His experience includes roles with the Indiana G League team, the Sacramento Kings in the NBA, and Team USA Basketball. Carl, who most recently worked with the Phoenix Mercury, also has a college coaching background, having served as a coach at the University of North Texas, San Diego State, and Metropolitan State University of Denver.
Both coaches will transition from their video coordinator roles to full-time assistant coach positions. This presents an exciting opportunity for them to begin their careers with a new team, especially one that is expanding. Additionally, they will be mentored by Brondello, a two-time WNBA champion head coach, which is a significant advantage for their professional development.
There's also speculation that Brondello's coaching staff may be completed by her husband, Olaf Lange, who is the head coach of the German women's national team. Lange's extensive coaching resume, including his recent work as an assistant coach for the Chicago Sky, makes him a strong candidate to join the Tempo's coaching staff.
While the Tempo's coaching situation is taking shape, they are still awaiting the expansion draft, which is on hold due to the ongoing contract dispute in the WNBA. However, the team is proactively preparing for the future by making strategic coaching hires, ensuring they are ready when the time comes to build their roster.
