In December 2024, Hollie Thursby, a 28-year-old resident of Sunderland, England, had just welcomed her son into the world when she began to feel unusual neck pain every time she consumed wine. Speaking to Kennedy News and Media, which was reported by the Daily Mail, she shared her experience: "After I had my son Jack, I would enjoy a couple of glasses of wine with dinner, but I started feeling pain in my neck and behind my left ear. It seemed inconsistent—sometimes prosecco would be fine, and lager didn’t bother me, but wine was particularly painful."
Alongside this troubling symptom, Thursby also experienced persistent itchiness and overwhelming fatigue. "I felt utterly exhausted for quite some time," she explained. "It wasn't typical to need daytime naps, especially as a busy mom, and I kept complaining about how itchy my skin felt, especially on my legs."
Interestingly, she initially attributed her exhaustion to the demands of motherhood, balancing the care of a toddler and a newborn. However, in January 2025, she decided to consult a doctor. To her dismay, when she relayed her symptoms, the medical professionals attributed them to hormonal changes following childbirth. "I accepted the GP's explanation and didn’t suspect anything further," she recalled.
As months passed, she noticed a lump forming on her neck, prompting her to revisit her doctor. This time, she was referred for a CT scan and biopsy. The results in October 2025 delivered a devastating blow—she was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, symptoms of this disease can include swollen lymph nodes, which may indeed cause pain when consuming alcohol, alongside other signs like fever, night sweats, and extreme fatigue.
"When I spoke with the specialist in blood cancers, she mentioned that despite her 17 years of experience, she had only encountered this particular case once before," Thursby noted. "Interestingly, the pain associated with drinking alcohol is recognized as a potential symptom of Hodgkin lymphoma. It appears that it's related to the acidity found in wine, unlike other types of alcoholic beverages."
In November, Thursby, who works as a primary school teacher, commenced chemotherapy to combat her cancer, a process she will continue over the coming months. Reflecting on her childhood—having lost her mother to a blood disorder—she expressed her deep concerns about not being present in her children’s lives. "The hardest part of this journey is the fear of not being there for my boys. I worry about dying and leaving them behind. Growing up without a mother was incredibly difficult, and I can’t bear to do that to my sons."
Despite facing uncertainty, she emphasized the support she has received and her determination to remain hopeful now that she has a diagnosis. "While we’re all heartbroken, we now have clarity and a treatment plan in place, which is crucial," she explained. "I’m doing everything within my power to recover for them. I keep reminding myself that this is only a temporary situation; I just have to keep pushing forward."
